Breaking the Mold: The Louisville Clay 10th Anniversary

October 19, 2012 @ 12:00 am - December 21, 2012 @ 12:00 am

Friday, October 19, 2012–Friday, December 21, 2012

Press Release:

On Friday, October 19th in Old Louisville, the Event of the Decade—literally—will occur at Weber Gallery for the artists of Louisville Clay.

Louisville Clay, a club of over 100 fine ceramic artists from the metro and surrounding areas, will celebrate their 10th anniversary with a special exhibition.  This is a rare opportunity to behold an exhibit that is nothing short of a demonstration of the versatility of this basic and ancient medium.

The potters of Louisville Clay, many nationally recognized, started their association in 2002 with a dedication to “enriching individual creativity” and “enhancing the understanding and appreciation of ceramic art.”  To understand and appreciate ceramic art is to understand and appreciate possibility, for the diversity of possibilities inherent in the manipulation of clay has held the fascination of humans since the discovery of fire.

Louisville Clay artists have developed unique  philosophies, techniques, and processes, which include eagerly shared discoveries and carefully guarded secret glaze formulas.  Each artist is somewhat of a chemist, exploring the elementary combinations of earth, fire, and water to produce signature organic expressions.

This exhibition highlights artists who challenge the limits of ceramic art.  From delicate liquid pieces with deep-pool surfaces to those that appear to be spewed out of a volcano, from whimsical to utilitarian, there is truly something for everyone at this show.  The sheer breadth of the art mirrors the breadth of humanity, making this exhibit especially fitting for Weber Gallery, which enhances every show by the participation of artists with disabilities.  The integration of these artists with their extraordinary Louisville Clay brethren carries the ethic of challenging limits, and the themes of diversity and possibility, another step further.
