Collected and Familiar things by KIM HUBER
October 2, 2014 @ 12:00 pm - November 15, 2014 @ 6:00 pmFree
New work from Kim Huber
October 2nd, 2014 through November 15th, 2014
“Collected Materials + Familiar Things,” mixed media artist Kim Huber’s upcoming exhibition at
Pyro Gallery, is a reclamation project. The pieces in the show are made with left over fragments from past projects and material the artist has often purchased for something else but never got around to using. Huber draws colorful geometric shapes on wood panels and old furniture that she covers with paper and gesso, a white paint mixture consisting of a binder mixed with chalk, gypsum, or pigment. The artist colors stye images with watercolor crayon and then layers over them with a non-resistant crayon. Huber began her career as a textile artist and that aesthetic carries over into her mixed media work.
“After I graduated from the Louisville School of Art in 1981, I spent the summer studying in Japan for six-weeks through the Parsons School of Design,” she explains. “i’ve always liked
Japanese textiles. I appreciate the care and intensity they put into design, especially with the tradition of the kimono. A lot of that has stayed with me. My work is not political or anything. I want people to have a good feeling when they see my art.”
“Collected Materials + Familiar Things” will be on display at Pyro Gallery, 909 E. Market St. October 2 through November 15. The gallery will host and artist’s reception on October 3 as well as on November 7th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., during the First Friday Trolley Hop.
