Evolving: New Work by Debra Lott
Known for painting human forms that accent color and naturalism, PYRO member Debra Lott turns her attention in her latest collection of work to reflect on both artistic and social change.
Focusing on specific people from her personal life, Lott has recorded those lives by capturing specific moments that tell their personal stories, and placing their story in the context of larger social issues.
Long-time followers of Lott’s colorful and naturalistic work will notice an exciting new emphasis on texture in her latest body of work. The artist has put handmade paper under the images and has used bolder brushstrokes to make texture a more expressive element in the new work. “An artist is always supposed to experiment,” Lott asserts. “I paint and draw [and] … I am always looking for ways to do something different within my chosen disciplines. It is all about finding new ways to communicate with the viewer.”
Lott is a graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University, and holds a Master in Art Teaching (MAT) with a specialization in painting from Florida Atlantic University. Her paintings have won myriad awards and appeared in several publications.
In addition to Lott’s work, Lott has invited guest artist and fellow PYRO Member John McCarthy, to also exhibit some of his ceramic sculpture, which will include women as its focus. “Two Different Women” and other works may provoke a conversation about the various roles women play in our world.
“Evolving” will be at Pyro Gallery, 909 E Market St, from Thursday, August 14 to Saturday, September 27. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday, Noon to 6 p.m.
This event is free and open to the public; an experience you will not want to miss! Come celebrate local art with refreshments and meet the artist!
