“Have You Any Wool?”
October 3, 2014 @ 10:00 am - October 31, 2014 @ 6:00 pmFree
When two artist friends dream about sheep,
the result is an unusual collaboration:
a two-person show called “Have You Any Wool?”
Catherine Bryant is a landscape painter with a special affection for grazing sheep.
Vallorie Henderson is a fiber artist who creates two and three dimensional works by hand felting and dying raw wool and silk together.
The two Louisville artists, who are friends, have been discussing a collaborative art show celebrating sheep for years.
“Have You Any Wool?” opens 6 to 10 p.m. Friday (Oct. 3) at Craft(s) Gallery, 572 S. Fourth St., featuring oil-on-birch-panelpaintings by Bryant and felted wool-and-silk vessels and two-dimensional pieces by Henderson. It continues through Oct. 31.
About the artists
Bryant, a painter for more than 25 years, says she loves sheep for several reasons.
“Counting them helps us fall asleep. Their wool keeps us warm andis used for carpets. And yes, and in some cases, their meat is used for nourishment. Sheep ‘herd,’ depending on the company of each other to feel safe. In mythology, we see references to ‘The Golden Fleece’ and ‘The Sacrificial Lamb.’”
As she paints sheep, she says,“I like finding their personalities under all the wool.”
Henderson has been quilting, weaving and making felt for about the same amount of timethat Bryant has been painting. Her work has its origins in nature and combines a “love of exploring, a minimalist sensibility, and a sculptural approach to making.”
For this show, Henderson chose to use natural wool shorn from the flock of Suffolk ewes that first inspired her to make felt in the mid 1990’s. Several of the pieces for this show share names with those animals.
CRAFT(s) Gallery is a traditional and contemporary art gallery located in the historic Guthrie Coke building at Fourth and Chestnut streets open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday 12 p.m.-6 p.m.
