The Undertaking of Lily Chen tells the story of Deshi, a young man from rural China who
accidentally kills his brother and must find an unwed corpse for his brother to marry before his is
buried. He finds a candidate, but she is very much alive.
The inspirational seeds for the story were sown after Novgorodoff’s first visit to China in 2007,
when she read an article about the black market for female corpses that has sprung up in rural
areas of China. The purpose of this black market is to supply brides for “ghost marriages.” She
returned to China in 2009, traveling through the villages of Shanxi province, the setting for the
story, doing visual research.
The exhibition of original illustrations from the novel will be on view April 3, 2014 through May 2,
2014 at the 849 Gallery. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 11:30a to 2:30p.
