On the Strip is an exhibition featuring one of the most popular, enduring, and ubiquitous art forms, the cartoon. Selected from area collections including the University of Louisville, the Filson Historical Society and the archives of the Courier-Journal, the exhibition includes works from the 18th century to the present with a particular focus on the mid-20th century. The exhibition traces the origins of cartoon as well as pondering its influences on other art forms and includes a diverse array of local and nationally syndicated artists. On the Strip features such recognizable characters as Donald Duck, Snoopy and Beetle Bailey as well as arresting images and commentary from Louisville and national history.
The exhibition is presented by the Louisville Visual Art Association and curated by Slade Stumbo. On the Strip will be on view at PUBLIC from January 17–March 1, 2014.
