Curated by Julien Robson
April 3 – May 30, 2015

Friday, April 10: Opening Reception, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

“My art work is about identity, the passage of time, and death.”

Zephyr Gallery is proud to present Project 7, the work of Lexington artist Louis Zoellar Bickett.

Since 1972, Louis Zoellar Bickett has been developing what he refers to as The Archive, a work of art that strives to catalogue the totality of his environment, encompassing art projects and the materials that make up and are contained within his home-cum-studio. The Archive contains the commonplace that surrounds him, things he has acquired or that have been given to him, such as letters, papers, receipts, photographs, books, memorabilia, and everyday objects, stored in jars and boxes, on cabinets and shelves. Bickett also creates original photographs, objects, and installations. Each and every one of these articles is tagged—or due to be tagged—and catalogued, recorded in what the artist refers to as the Cultural Memorabilia Volume Project, which is an exhaustive, detailed reference index bound in black plastic folders that currently takes up over 70 feet of shelf space.

The Archive is like a grand self-portrait that occupies the whole of Bickett’s home-studio. Presented outside this environment, however, it can only be a fragmentary sketch of itself. Here at Zephyr a number of elements have been brought together to give audiences a recontextualised experience of Bickett’s work and some insight intoThe Archive as a dynamic form of self-portraiture. A glimpse into Bickett’s grand enterprise these works collectively reveal something of the artist and his consuming interest in the vital discussions that revolve around issues of sexuality, race, and identity, and discrimination in all its forms.

Thanks to Kathy Lundy Jones, Leslie and James Millar, Ladonna Nicholas, Merrily Orsini and Rick Heath, Sandy and Bill Schreiber, and two anonymous supporters for helping make this project possible.
