I do not believe in being defined by our roles or job descriptions. I love creating, whether it be in the medical world or in the world of creative arts. My work is about transition, transformation and ultimately triumph, which is the course I see each of us following in our lives. I work primarily with encaustics and wood cuts. My imagery is heavily influenced by Hindu, Buddhist and early Catholic symbolism. I choose forms that convey my love of nature as it transforms itself into the world of spirit. The majority of the wood cuts in the show have been made using scraps of wood from a furniture studio next to mine, Daniel Chaffin Furniture, giving the work a “recycled” component. The encaustics are on either birch wood panels or odd scraps of unfinished wood from the furniture makers. During my apprenticeship in stained glass and design at Fenestra Studios, I gained a deep love for the single, strong line balanced by the intense color of the surrounding glass.
Rex Lagerstrom received a BA in Art and a BA in Chemistry from Bellarmine University. He is also a graduate from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Originally from Connecticut, he has worked for the last 25 years as an internist and an artist in Louisville, Kentucky. Since 1996, he has exhibited regionally, including at Bellarmine University, Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, and at Zephyr Gallery for which he was a member. In addition to his studies in painting and printmaking, he completed a two-year apprenticeship with Fenestra Studios in Stained Glass in 1980, and has designed over 250 windows, doorways and church windows in the Louisville area over the last 30 years. He collaborates with Peter Eichhorn on major glass projects, who had originally been his instructor in stained glass. He likes to spend time outdoors, especially with his four children.
