ABOUT BORIS ZAKIC
Even before his graduation in 2000 with his MFA (from the U.of New Orleans), Zakic was turning the heads of curators, gallery directors, collectors and supporters of the visual arts. Classically trained in Eastern Europe, Zakic integrates Classical Old World Realism with Photo-Realism/Surrealism/Gestural Abstract Expressionism (in the past a little Pop, ie: Larry Rivers’ use of words) giving a new direction/meaning to being a Painter’s painter.
His current show @ Galerie Hertz embodies all of these elements, but with a new twist – Minimalism in regards to his choice of palette, here again Zakic has been able to say volumes “more” with less pigment & the inclusion of raw canvas. BORIS ZAKIC has been passionately obsessive about everything in his life, from teaching to his observations of ancient history, literature, architecture and beyond.
His brain is like a giant sponge, it sucks up all that is offered and then is able to compartmentalize that which is important & then discards that which is irrelevant, and re-assembles said information; combining of all these disparate elements gives Zakic one of the strongest, most unique voices to date in American painting in the new millennium.
In fact, I believe not since the figurative paintings of Eric Fischl in the early 80′s, have paintings so strongly fostered/engaged the viewer in dialog on so many levels!
